Dick Harris Scholarship Fund

Background

This fund was created by Dick Harris to provide college scholarships to Hispanic male or female students who have graduated from Midland Independent School District high schools. Mr. Harris' long career as an elementary school teacher and his many years as a Midland Scoutmaster helped determine the eligibility criteria for prospective recipients.

The fund was also created to honor the memory of Michael F. Avila, who was outstanding as a Scout in Troop 158 and as a role model in his troop, his family, and his friends.

Awards will be based upon the following criteria:

  • Financial need
  • Native resident of Midland, Texas
  • Male or female of Hispanic origin
  • Good character and citizenship
  • Attended at least three years and have graduated from a Midland, Texas, ISD high school (students leaving school and obtaining a GED will also be considered).
  • Show evidence of at least two years participation as an active member of a Midland, Texas Boy Scout Troop or Girl Scout Troop
  • Must have completed their freshman year in college with a 2.50 grade point average or better
Have an official Midland College degree plan with the intent to complete a bachelor’s degree in elementary education

For more information, please visit www.pbaf.org. Deadline for application is March 31, 2012.
