Train With Your Girl (TWYG)

Join us for a one-of-a-kind Girl Scout winter adventure as we explore our Big Bend region while learning STEM. 

Open to Leaders or Co-Leaders and their Girl Scout Junior or above. One Girl Scout per volunteer.

Big Bend Ranch State Park offers outdoor recreation for the truly adventurous. This remote park features rugged mountains, steep canyons, amazing views, unparalleled night skies, and solitude in a high desert setting. Friday, December 13, 2019*

  • Stay overnight at Camp Mitre Peak (included).
  • Optional and individual trip to McDonald Observatory for an outdoor Star Party at 7:00 pm. Additional fees of $12 per adult. $8 per girl.

Saturday, December 14, 2019*

  • Drive to or meet at Fort Leaton.
  • Introduction to the Big Bend and Leave No Trace Ethics (~30 minutes).
  • Travel to Closed Canyon to hike (~40 minutes travel time; 45 minute hike). Discuss desert ecosystems and Rio Grande Valley terrain.
  • Travel to Sauceda Headquarters and bunkhouse (~1.5 hours) in the interior of the state park; Check in time 3 pm.
  • Enjoy a Dutch Oven Chili Dinner and Star program.

Sunday, December 15, 2019*

  • Breakfast on your own.
  • Short morning workshop.
  • Cinco Tinajas Hike to tinajas and archeology site.
  • Check out by 11 am.

Important Information

  • Only meal provided will be Saturday night dinner. You are responsible for all other meals. Kitchen available.
  • The Sauceda Ranger Station is 27 miles of rugged, dirt road from FM 170 (River Road). This hour and a half ride is the only way in and out of the interior of the park. Most vehicles can make it to the Sauceda Ranger Station. High clearance vehicles (8 in), two spare tires, and all terrain tires (at least 6 ply) recommended. 
  • No fuel available in the park.
  • While we will be spending the night indoors, it is unheated. 
  • This training course is $60 per person. 
  • No refunds provided for cancellations after the deadline.
  • Must be a current registered member of Girl Scouts.
  • Must be a volunteer in good standing.
  • Confirmation email will be sent a week before training with paid registration.

Directions

  • We recommend visitors planning to check in at Big Bend Ranch State Park interior at Sauceda take HWY 67 South.
  • From Alpine, TX. Take US 67 west to Marfa, then south to Presidio. Take FM 170 East 3 miles to reach Fort Leaton, or East 5 miles to the Casa Piedra Road. From the Casa Piedra Road follow signs 27 miles to the Sauceda Visitor Center. OR From Alpine, TX take FM 118 south to Study Butte.
